|
|
I was in the kitchen talking to my wife when the fire alarm went off down the other end or the house near the entrance to my garage. Upon investigation I found my garage workbench fully ablaze. No batteries were on charge at the time, but I had just charged one 30 minutes earlier. Once the fire was out and I rifled through charred remains of 6 batteries and other things on the bench I discovered it was caused by the battery I had just charged. I am now paranoid as if I wasnt home I would have come home to a burned down shell. Im not worried about my house or contents but I would be gutted if I lost my helis (he he). Im using a quality charger. . .so how can this happen |

Lipo's are very dangerous.
It just happens. Keep Lipo's in a fire (Proof) box if there is such a thing. I have all mine in an 50 CAL. AMO can.

Can I ask what brand lipo went up?
Was it a name brand or one of the cheaper ones?
I have a friend whos uses one of the heavy fire proof personal safes to store his batteries in. |

Hi there. Thanks for your reply. It was an ecoflight 1800 3 cell and was a cheaper brand. I didnt use it in a heli, it was used in a low current draw plane. It took out 2 of my 3000 6 cell batts and other batts that I had on the bench with it. It was an expensive lesson but could have been much worse. Shows the importance of smoke alarms in the house and fire safe storage. cheers and happy flying |

This is exactly why I stick with the better known brand LiPo batts. I pay a lot more $ for them, but I sleep better for it. |

Brand is no guarantee, but if you can find cells with the protection circuit on the end, THAT'S a pretty good indication of a trouble-free life. The problem comes when you over-discharge a cell -- in a multi-cell pack, this starts a chain reaction where the two or more good cells are trying to charge the bad cell. This leads to catastrophic results. With 18650's, flashlights have literally exploded. |
