hi squidgy
i can not say for sure which heli is your best bet. but dont believe everything a salesman tells you he may not have your best interests at heart. check out some posts on those individual forums to gain more info.
you can learn a surprising amount just by reading various posts.

hard to disagree with tombo on the blade 400.
i have three collective pitch helicopters and the blade 400 is the easiest to hover maybe because its the largest. they do say bigger = more stability.
I am mixed on opinions here. I am also a noob (fairly so). I have
a new 400, & it was scary to Me at 1`st, but ai went into the radio
& toned down the pitch curve & added about 10% expo to allmbut
the rudder. Now it`s alot like My bigger nitro,& alot easier to
hover around.
However, I agree w/Trev on gaining some sticktime first.
If Your heart is pounding it`s prolly gonna cost You. Take
It slow.

Hi squidgy,
Well there you have it, people with a Blade 400 say "Go for it", those without say otherwise.
The final choice has to be yours. I would not reverse my decision to go straight to a Blade 400, but then I have never flown a 3 channel heli and have no wish to.

If your just learning , than i recommend this:
This is what i learnd on.
http://www.wowhobbies.com/walkeracb180dhelicopterrx-rx-2423-notx-1-1-6.aspx
This heli is very stable and can be set up to be more agile as you get better. Crashes cost alot less than on the other models you mentiond.
I also have friends that are learning on this heli and doing good.
http://www.xheli.com/walkeraheli-v200d02-metal-222-rtf-lcd.html
These are both very good first time heli's and are alot eiser than the honeybee fp v2 to hover.
My first attempt was a cp heli and it didnt work out for me. As a beginer, i just crashed alot and when i did it cost alot more $ and time to fix.So i went to a fp heli. and after i got better at that then i went the cp rout, and had no problems flying cp after that. What a difference experience did for me.
Here is a video of it flying outside at a motel i was at.

I had a Fixed Pitch back in 8o's ........ didn't want to repeat that exercise.
Bought a co-ax beginning 2010 ... thoroughly enjoyed it ... but wanted to fly outside ....
Bought a Trex 450 clone and tamed it down on curves / head speed and added flybar weights ....
It's a handful - but to be honest - is way better and more controllable than that fixed pitch job ever was.
Would I do it differently now that I've had the CP 450 ? No I don't think I would. The other Heli flyer in my town has the Belt Esky job and he learnt on that. He reckons my tamed down 450 is better.
So it depends on YOU ....
Can you take the amount of crashing and rebuild it will need ?
Do you have deep pockets to buy all the steping stone machines up to that 450 or similar most want ?
Do you have someone who can help ?
And of course plenty of sim time ... HeliSimRC has a 450 Trex as default and it flies just like mine !

im starting to believe the higher up the heli ladder you go the choice of transmitter becomes of equal importance as the helicopter. surely a good tx can make any heli a good training model that can grow along with you as you learn.
